*This is video from the 3:30 p.m. press conference Friday afternoon at the University of Hawaii.
Hawaii coach Greg McMackin is being suspended for 30 days without pay, and he is voluntarily taking a pay cut for making a derogatory comment while describing Notre Dame's chant before last year's Hawaii Bowl.
McMackin addressed reporters late Friday after meeting with athletic director Jim Donovan and Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw to discuss Thursday's incident.
He made a tearful apology to anyone he offended by his comments.
In addition to his suspension and pay cut, McMackin will participate in a Public Service Announcement describing how much words can hurt. The money from his pay cut will also be used to hire a student intern who will help with campus workshops and training.
Video at link worth watching.

(Clara Peller style) Where's the link??
Re: UH Coach puts his foot in his mouth; UH puts their hand in his pocket
I don't think this is the first time he's said something out of line.
He's coaching in Hawaii, no better job in college football, I'm sure the paycut was easy to swallow. lol

But it says there is a link. I want a link. No fair LOL I protest, I want a contract. I want to wear high heels, I want to go out to lunch.
OMG I'm quoting Goldie Hawn lines.
I'ts Saturday and I have nothing better to do. Thought I would find out just what this guy said about Notre Dame, since I am a fan, and I am Irish.
Never mind, I'm rambling.

If you google his name I'm sure you can find a video.

Now why didn't I think of that?
Re: UH Coach puts his foot in his mouth; UH puts their hand in his pocket
Well according to the story I found about his apology and the video that accompanied it, he thought he was being funny, and said the word funny about six times in about a minute. He was fined $169,000, and still faces disciplinary action or termination by the University of Hawaii. Not sure what will happen, but his choice of words was seriously out of line.

Sorry guys. Thats the one for the full video links.
From what I heard on the news, the Notre Dame guys did a dance when they visited here for the 2008 Conference. It was their answer or our Warrior Dance that the guys do ALL the time.
Personally, I thought that the visiting team taking the time to learn a dance and perform for our team was a REALLY great gesture. Surely it was out of their comfort zone.
Somehow that dance came up in an interview a few days ago and Mack used the term 'faggot' to describe the dance.
Yeah... seriously bad choice of words. I cant imagine how commonplace it must be in his vocabulary to spew forth like it did.
This was the link to what was on lastnight about his fine:

This is the original comment where he uses the slur 3x.

Coach Greg McMackin Apologizes For Slur
Written by Brooks Baehr - bbaehr@kgmb9.com

University of Hawaii football coach Greg McMackin is on the defensive after using a derogatory remark hurtful to homosexuals.
McMackin, the highest paid employee on the state payroll, used the word not once, but three times during a press conference during the Western Athletic Conference football season preview in Salt Lake City.
While addressing the media McMackin brought up a banquet held in Waikiki before the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl in December 2008.
U.H. players performed their traditional haa at the banquet. Notre Dame players did a team chant.
McMackin was referencing the Notre Dame chant and Irish head coach Charlie Weis when he said this at the football preview in Utah.
"He (Weis) had his guys, 'we do something special at Notre Dame' he said, and they get up and they do this little cheer, like this, you know, this little faggot dance.
Fifteen seconds after making that disparaging comment, McMackin asked the media not to report what he said.
"Don't write that faggot thing down. I was misquoted," McMackin said jokingly.
Conference commissioner Karl Benson was in the room and it appears coach McMackin was talking to Benson when he said the word a third time.
"Cover for me. Go ahead, say faggot dance. No. Please cover for me on that, too, right Karl? I'll deny it," McMackin said.
"Clearly it's a very unfortunate word to use not once, but three times," said Jo-Ann Adams.
Adams is with the Pride Alliance, a group working to end discrimination.
"The first thing you have to ask is, why would he even think that word much less say that word, and then repeat it as if the joke was continued and people would help him cover up his misspeak," Adams told KGMB9.
"You know coach McMackin said something inappropriate and I'm disappointed. I know he's disappointed. He's apologized for it," said U.H. Athletics Director Jim Donovan.
In fact McMackin apologized several times, both in person to the media and in a written statement released by the university.
"I would sincerely like to apologize for the inappropriate verbiage ... words that I used," McMackin told reporters in Utah.
"I don't have any prejudices, and it really makes me mad that I said that. And I'm disappointed in myself. I was trying to make a joke and it was a bad choice of words. And it was really stupid. And I feel really bad about it and I apologize," he added.
McMackin's gaffe has received national attention.
"Hawaii head football Greg McCackin is apologizing after using a homosexual slur three times during his Western Athletic Conference media news conference," said ESPN during a sportscast Thursday.
U.H. president David McClain issued a statement saying, "I am angered and disappointed by the statement attributed to coach McMackin. It certainly does not represent the values of the University of Hawaii. I'm glad to learn that coach has apologized; this is the first step in the healing process."
But is an apology enough ... or will the coach face disciplinary action from the university or the conference?
"Well, I can't disclose personnel matters and disciplinary ... or potential disciplinary action is a personnel matter," Donovan said.
"He's a good man. He made a mistake. And he's going to have to own up to it, which he's started to do," Donovan added.
"Of course I'm offended, but I think we don't need to do a pile-on on the coach. I think what we need to do, which I'm more interested in, is what is the culture which bred that kind of comment. What is it about the sports program here that he would find that perfectly acceptable," Adams said.
Donovan said he called Notre Dame's athletic director to apologize.

Hate to say it but locker room talk is alive and well."... which I'm more interested in, is what is the culture which bred that kind of comment. What is it about the sports program here that he would find that perfectly acceptable," Adams said.
