Both U.S. political parties offend...

Post by JayDubya on Sun 26 Jul 2009, 2:14 pm

To me this is not about Joe the plumber whose real name is Sam. His views here are examples of where I stand on the political environment as it is today.

Both U.S. political parties offend "Joe the Plumber"

HOLLAND, Ohio (Reuters) - "Joe the Plumber," who came to symbolize U.S. taxpayer frustration during last year's election, sounds even angrier now at what he sees as excessive government spending on the economy and healthcare reform.

"The politicians in Washington are spending trillions of dollars of our money. When are Americans going to stand up and say enough is enough?" said Joe Wurzelbacher, 35, in an interview on Friday at his modest suburban Ohio home.

"Instead of spending more of our money, they should cut back like ordinary Americans are having to. Why do they think they can spend their way out of this mess?" said Wurzelbacher, referring to the $787 billion government stimulus bill.

Wurzelbacher has managed to prolong his 15 minutes of fame since he posed some tough questions of presidential candidate Barack Obama during an Ohio campaign stop in August 2008.

Obama's reply: "I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody," prompted Obama's Republican rival, Senator John McCain, to label the Democrat a socialist and catapulted Wurzelbacher into the media spotlight.

Reporters later learned that Wurzelbacher did not have a plumbing license, was behind on his taxes, had a real first name of Sam, and was unmarried with a teenage son.

At first Wurzelbacher courted the attention, then said it was draining and he wanted to get back to plumbing.

Wurzelbacher said he had voted for McCain but without enthusiasm. "In the end, I had to choose the lesser of two evils.

"Does the Republican Party represent anything I stand for right now? Absolutely not," he said. "Right now the Republican Party doesn't even know what it stands for."

Wurzelbacher said he now attends "tea parties" -- held by Conservative groups to protest against economic policies they dislike -- and does not have time to work as a plumber.

As for President Obama, Wurzelbacher said: "Obama likes to quote great men but will never be a great man himself. I can't stand it when our leader goes around apologizing for who we are."

He urged a grass-roots effort to hold leaders accountable. "Our ancestors picked up guns and knives for their freedom. All I'm asking people to do is pick up a book, get involved or start asking questions," he said.

First of all, Joe the Plumber is an idiot. It's easy to make general opinions on shit that you know nothing about, and he does that all the time.

"Instead of spending more of our money, they should cut back like ordinary Americans are having to. Why do they think they can spend their way out of this mess?" said Wurzelbacher, referring to the $787 billion government stimulus bill.

Well, this is a completely flawed statement. I wonder how many classes in economics Sam, the guy without a plumber's license, took? Let me guess... uhm, none? Obama walked into an economy that was basically stalled. People have stopped spending because they either (a) have no money to spend or (b) are terrified of not having any money in the near future. When there is little to no spending, there is little to no consumption. When businesses aren't selling, they are forced to lay off employees. When employees are laid off, they stop spending. It's a constant downward spiral. The only way to stop this is to pump money into the economy. Most respected economists seem to think that the amount of the stimulus package was probably too small, which, frankly, annoys me since it was smaller than Obama wanted but he was compromising with conservatives. Also, most economists agreed that the stimulus would take approximately 1 to 2 years to reach it's effect and stated that the last thing to return would be jobs - which really makes a lot of sense if you think about it.

So you are sick of politicians on both sides? Well, I'm sick of armchair economists who know nothing about economics spouting off about why everyone else is wrong. "Joe the Plumber" is the worst of them. Why is this guy given any credence at all? seriously?

We currently have a POTUS in place who seriously wants to do what he believes is best for our country, not what is politically expedient at the moment. He surrounds himself with the most knowledgeable people on any given topic and he makes sure that his advisers include people of all political points of view. He welcomes disagreement and discussion. He makes his decisions in a scholarly manner. After Georege W. Bush's my-way-or-the-highway approach, I find this to be an extreme breath of fresh air.

But you and Joe the Plumber are annoyed... yeah, ok. Tell me, then -- who on earth is more qualified to be leading our government? Joe Blow, Joe Sixpack or Joe the Plumber? The decisions being made are not as simple as so many people would like to believe.

And, Dammit, you KNEW I was going to take the bait on this one...

And my burning political question is: why would you write "POTUS" instead of just president?

Saved myself 4 keystrokes and guaranteed that everyone realized I am an American and not talking about the president of some other country all in one fell swoop. Unfortunately, answering your question has caused me a greater number of keystrokes so you have foiled my master plan.

Hahaha!!

I love your enthusiasm and you make great points.
I really am not against Obama as I might seem, I also like the breath of fresh air in DC and hope his plans/system work.
I don't support Joe the plumber but I am sick of partisan politics. The story I posted popped up on my home page today, I didn't go looking for it.

Cool

I agree the decisions are not simple, so stop saying they have the answers. Obama, or any president, is not the only one in DC making decisions. The problem goes a lot deeper into the system. Every politicians goal during their time in office is to get re elected. How is that good for the country? What's needed is someone who will stand up, say and do what's needed to be said and done, not what some small interest group who is the latest and loudest whiner says is right.
The people on the right side of the aisle are not always correct, but neither are the ones on the left. The ONLY time you see non partisanship is when it's an emotional issue. Which is all show anyway.

Why? Strong opinions? If so, bring them.

Agreed. If you enjoy a good debate with no personal attacks, this is the place.

I'm curious to see how pigroid does here...

Nothing to argue. Until the Republicans prove to return to their conservative roots, I am an independent.
